New Versions & New Management
by Tyler G. Hicks-Wright - July 1, 2015
Exactly 10 years ago, Copilot was first announced to the world. Today we have two big announcements.
The First Big Announcement
Today, Copilot is opening the beta for new versions of the client applications! After far too long of stagnation and building technical debt, we're moving forward again.
The "helper" application is now purely web-based, supporting all major browsers since IE 9. The "host" applications have been completely rewritten for Windows and Mac. These changes fix a lot of known issues with the older versions, and pave the way for more enhancements and upgrades in the future.
If you would like to take the new version out for a spin, go to your account page and enable the beta. Then create a new invitation and connect. Once you've given it a try, let us know what you think. And, of course, if the beta turns out not to be stable enough for you, you can disable it from your account page.
But, personally, I think you'll like it.
The Second Big Announcement
Copilot is under new management (and ownership)! Me.
This actually isn't a very recent development. The change in ownership has been in process for over a year. About the time Fog Creek was spinning out Trello, Copilot was seeing a similar fate. Fog Creek wanted to find a new home for Copilot. Those of us who started the project as interns had all left for other ventures, and there was no one left at Fog Creek with enough expertise to keep Copilot going. I was coming off of two years of freelancing when Michael contacted me about taking it on. We agreed on a structure to spin it out, and then went about separating it from the rest of the Fog Creek products.
Who Am I?
Hi, I'm Tyler. :)
I started at Fog Creek as an intern in 2005 on Project Aardvark, which became Copilot. I worked as one of the lead developers on Copilot until I transitioned off to help start Kiln. In 2012, I left Fog Creek to pursue my own ventures, working on a startup, my own side product, and freelance work. After 10 years, I'm coming full circle to take on Copilot again.
